Another rear end question?
« on: March 23, 2014, 09:35:08 PM »
Ok.. I know most commonly our gas engine trucks have 5.13 gears and the diesels have 4.63 unless it's a 4wd.
Friday I was under my truck checking over everything and took notice to the gear ratio tag. After scratching with a piece of sandpaper, it has 5.13 stamped on it.

Story of this truck is it started life as a rollback, the frame was stretched 3ft for a 19ft bed built by Jerrdan. Is it possible they swapped the rearend too? To me it all looks factory other than the double frame all the way to the back.   I've often wondered about the gear ratio because driving down the road at 60mph in 5th gear the tach is setting on 2600rpm and that's as fast as I've had it. Anybody have any ideas on this??

We kicked this topic around a while back, and I don't think there was any hard and fast rule about which axle came with which engine, just what seemed to be the most common setup.  I'm sure you could order it either way.

Also, consider that your truck may have come with the other gears, but the rear got swapped along the way when it went out.  Wrecker work...and drivers...are notoriously hard on equipment.

Thank you both and my HD has 463 ratio  ` Is that the most common for the HD ?  i know some have 513 but it seems like 463 & 513  are the only ones Ive seen in the HD
