Looking for a bolt on receiver hitch for C3500HD
« on: January 18, 2014, 03:33:07 AM »
Hey all,

i am in search of a bolt on receiver hitch for a C3500HD. the one it will be going on has a behind axle fuel tank.

the flatbed that is going one is kinda tacky, so it may be changed out later, so I would prefer that the hitch doesnt tie itself to the bed too badly.

I would prefer no-drill install too.

any input appreciated, thanks!

Seriously doubt one was ever made for any chassis cab type truck.

It was pretty easy for me to convert one for a 92-99 Suburban using a split piece of C-channel; I utilized existing holes in the frame and drilled through the channel in order to make adapters to bolt the Suburban receiver to the HD.  Some careful choice of materials, bolt placement, and hardware used should net you a very sturdy result.  I used the channel because it was a nice thick piece of material I had sitting around already, but obviously you could save yourself cut-off work by using thick angle iron.

Look at it this way: even if a purpose-made hitch existed for the HD it would set you back nearly $200; this solution can be done for next to nothing if you get a Suburban hitch from the boneyard and use a little material from the steel supply and pick up proper hitch hardware from the trailer store.

thanks for the post. we have a burb hitch we just picked up at an auction for 5 bucks, so we will look into that.

the one thing I dont like is the weight rating, the burb hitch is only good for 10K, we are usually at 14K, and would like a little more.

Recently, I was looking at B&W's new rear receiver hitch line, and they are heavy, like 16K. according to the fitment chart, they act like 73-87 pickups and 88-09 chassis cabs are the same application, so I may look into getting one of them.

I bolted side plates to frame and hitch as well as to the bottom of frame to make it extra strong & used grade 8 fine thread bolts
