Tachometer for 6.5
« on: June 20, 2011, 10:40:50 PM »
I read the post of the 454 tach question.  Unlike the gas engine which has a coil or distributor to connect, what type "tach" works on the 6.5, mechanical or electrical?  Where do you hook the sending part (unit) into the motor.  My tractor has a mechanical which runs off the IP.  Help on this would be greatly appreciated. Also will have a post on the driveline page.

When I had a sick.5 and the factory in-dash tach, it read off the alternator. I don't know if yours would be set up to run a tach or not, but I'm going to use a Dakota Digital box to convert a signal from the alternator to run a gasser tach.

There are also tachs that clamp a pickup to the body of the alternator, and just like the others, need a way to confirm RPM, such as an optical tach.

Thanks Raymo.  Had no idea tachs could be run like that.  Only diesels I have had any (very little) experience with was Detroit Diesel and Perkins, which had the mechanical.  On the moving the rear end to shorten the wheel base on my truck, I decided to leave it as is and put a 12' flat bed on it.  Thanks for all your help and experience.
