Engine Swap/Regear/adapters Questions
« on: January 13, 2020, 01:25:06 PM »
Alright so I have a '96 auto with the 7.4 Vortec. I bought this truck with the intentions of doing a cab swap with a '48 International I have. And because I wanted the 10' bed. I wish I would have just waited and found a dodge cab and chassis, but I got this one for scrap price. I do like the frame size though.

The parameters:
Im either doing a Cummins 12v swap or an International DT466. (I have one of each of these in my barn)

The 12v likes to cruise 70mph at 1800 rpm. The DT466 likes 2000-2100 rpm at 70mph.

Im either going to us a FSO-8406A with the DT466 or a NV4500 with the Cummins.

I believe I have the 4.63 rear gears.

I plan on using the truck to tow 24K pretty constant. I would like to do 75mph empty; Hwy speeds here are 80mph.

The problems:
So if I use the stock 225/70r19.5 I would have to regear the Dana 80 to 3.55 gear set no matter the transmission, to cruise at 70 mph.
Cost to Regear: $1200+
OR
I can get larger rims and tires going to a 11R22.5. But there seems to be no solution in the ways of adapters or spacers still?
Custom adapters: $2000+?

I would prefer the 22.5 rim route as they would fill the fenders on my conversion cab way better and look pretty dang good. I have 2 sets of 24.5 rims but that may be a bit to big.

Mainly just looking for more thoughts and insight on this?

I found these just now by accident. They say they are 10x7.25" to 10x285 adapters for 5.25 hub bore. Thats what our rims are right?

That would allow me to run 22.5 rims and tires and not have to regear. Plus the benefit of larger rims! But.... $3000 for 2 front and 2 rears.

Thoughts?

Many of the Dodge diesel Dana 80's that came with a manual transmission have a 3.55 gearset. I imagine you could swap carrier/r&p with one of those and be good to go, but it would depend what kind of look you want. 22.5's rims and tires would look pretty cool, tires would last forever. But $$$$. You could swap the rear with the dodge truck rear, but then you have 8 bolt in the back to deal with. Could run a gear vendors overdrive, too, so you have the extra grunt for accelerating but the benefit of the overdrive for cruising. Part of the rated weight capacity of these trucks IS the low gearing in the rear.

Part of me believes the dodge Dana 80 ring and pinion won

Yeah, I'm also thinking it won't fit, they have a different carrier for these lower geared ones in the 3500hd's with a bigger ring gear.
