1995 c3500 with no turbo
« on: May 16, 2010, 01:43:57 AM »
I am new to this post as i have just bought a 1995 3500hd diesel at a auction. what i failed to notice is there is no turbo on it and all associated pieces are not there. I dont know much about the truck but i does look to be physically in good condition i insured it and drove it to a friends place and had to leave it there as my trailer was a bit small for it so i have to drive about 700 Kilometers 400 miles approx ) to get it home.
For those that know, is there any real problems with doing this.
My other question is there some where too look for all the pieces that are missing for the turbo that i can get all together  that wont break the bank.
It has a regular air filter on top of the manifold
The reason i bought this truck was because it has a flat deck on it and my hydroseeder will fit on it and it will save the damage of my personal truck.

Thanks for any that can help

Ajmctree

Welcome to the forum, I suspect that someone will jump in with an answer to your question. I'm interested in hearing the response myself.   I just parted out a 95 turbo diesel a couple months back and sold the engine as a complete unit and could have sold the turbo to you. There are a few folks like me replacing the diesel with gas engines so finding what you need shouldn't be too tough.  I see you are from Canada..again Welcome.

so I understand, the engine you have is running, complete with air filter and exhaust system. In 1995 your vehicle used the obd1 computer system, which means it would have an electronic DS4 fuel injection pump and a fuel potentiometer (gas peddle). The gas peddle is also know as a "fly by wire" do to its lack of a cable. Is all of the above mentioned still in place or maybe its been converted to an earlier engine, possibly a 6.2? There should also be a vaccum pump on the lower RH side used to control the turbo waste gate, is that present? Your engine should have a serpentine belt rather then V-belts driving the accessories.

Ya i was thinking it might be a 6.2 or 6.5-N/A for some reason for it to be running I know if the vac pump fails you have no Boost on the 95' 6.5-T and it'll run just fine . . .

But i think physically removing the turbo would result in failure to run ?

Unless it was removed and the proper 6.5-N/A parts were used in the turbo deletion . . .

If the computer from the 95 turbo engine is used to run with the turbo removed it will run, but the check engine light will always be present. The MAP sensor is the three wire black rectangle sensor on top of the intake, it stands for "manifold air pressure". As soon as the computer senses low boost a code will trip. This should also send the computer into "limp home" mode. Limp mode will lower the fuel mapping, which reduces power below harmful levels. This was designed to allow the vehicle to be driven to the dealership. I do recall when my 95 service truck had one of the old blue tag injector pumps take a dive, WFO was 35 mph. Waiting on a wrecker would have been a lot faster. The best thing to do is put the turbo back on. The only other option is find the L49 version 6.5, this was a non turbo version. In 1995 the OBD1 computer used a PROM chip for programming. If You can find a wrecked 1/2 ton with out a turbo and swap the PROM chips it might work. Remember if yours is automatic transmission, the the PROM needs to be from an Auto Trans. Just remember most C3500HDs are pushing 10,000 lbs empty, you put a non turbo 6.5 in it, you got about 150 hp. You 0 - 60 mph times will be measured in days, not seconds.

Just thinking out loud..but I bought that 92 3500HD that had a diesel/auto and was converted to a gas engine. Removed the ECM last week since it wasn't being used anyway. Wonder if the MEMCAL might have any value to ajmctree's situation?

might could use the 92 computer to run the transmission. The 95 is a electronic IP (DS4)so that would need to be changed to mechanical (DB2) along with the drive by wire fuel peddle.

10-4...dumb on my part..I should have caught that myself.  Looks like the only option left might be a custom burned eprom for the memcal?
