BW4470 parts
« on: March 04, 2016, 03:27:58 PM »
Got my HD converted to 4wd. Donor driveshaft was junk, had new one built. Now it seems the splines within my bw4470 output yoke have a bit of play up/down, not twisting. Looking to see if anyone has a spar output yoke or knows where to get one. I already checked the output bearing for play and it was fine.

How much is a bit? If the bearing just behind the yoke is tight, maybe the bearing on the opposite end of the shaft is suspect. I'm talking the one on the inside, back half of the case.

This play is with the yoke nut tight? A bad shaft will raise hell in a hurry on a transfer case, ask me how I know...  ;D

A bit as in 1/8" of vertical play. I removed the park brake, bought a ??32mm?? Or ?31mm? Socket and turned it round and round on the grinder until it was thin enough to fit in the yoke and remove the nut. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get any play out of the transfer case main shaft. I think that maybe the old driveshaft took a toll on the yoke splines. There is also a rubber washer that goes between the yoke and mating surface on the mainshaft. I'm going to remove it and see if that helps take out some slop

Those yoke nuts have a bad habit of coming loose if some sort of locktite is not used, that wears out the splines pretty quick. My 4wd hd came with a ground socket to keep tightening it up. After having to do it twice in the first 800 miles, I put some blue (removable application) locktite on it and no problems since. Felt like a bad ujoint, sounded even worse coasting.

That's some good advice. I'll try that. It's not enough play to make it noticeable while driving but I can see it when I push on it. And I'd rather not ruin my brand new driveshaft.

Sooooo... Removed my new driveshaft, removed transfer case output yoke, removed the rubber washer from the shaft that was sitting behind the yoke, installed output yoke and soaked rear output yoke nut with threadlocker. Got going on the highway yesterday at 65 mph and had vibration on decel will in gear and out of gear down to about 45mph. First time since 4wd conversion it's seen highway speed. Got under the truck, rear output yoke is now still nice and tight but I am getting minimal movement from possibly the second bearing from the rear in the transfer case. Transfer case is the only thing that hasn't been messed with. When I got all these parts both front and rear driveshafts were junk. Good sign that maybe the t case needs a rebuild now too. Gunna order a rebuild kit and new chain. Also I can hear a slight rattle on decel until the truck is stopped. This is the down side of buying 16 year old parts to custom build a 16 year old truck. Some of those parts being irreplaceable. Luckily my output yoke is tight bc I don't see any way of finding a new one

Kind of a pain to listen and diagnose problems when there's a super noisy 6.5 and stiff as a board suspension catching air over every pebble

What angle are your t-case and rear axle yokes at? They need to be within 1* of each other. Poor angles can attribute to the rattle you're hearing.

I'm at exactly 1* difference. And only 13* slope on my driveshaft

Soooo, while searching Craigslist I found a BW4470 near me. 75,000 original miles, no leaks, nice looking tcase. Got if for $140. Today I remove my suspected bad tcase and swapped the park break setup over to the new tcase. Rechecked driveline angles, installed new tcase and then took it for a test drive. NO VIBRATIONS.so my 4x4 swap is now operating nicely.
