Title: 454 sputtering only between 3000-3200 RPM?
Post by: jfobare on August 02, 2018, 09:25:57 AM
So its a 97 HD 454 Vortec with a 10 foot Dump with 70000 miles. Once a Month give or take, it will sputter like a few of misfires in a row, almost like the valves are floating? . But only ever between 3000-3200 rpm, only with a good load in it like 4-5000lbs going uphill and only at more than half throttle. I cant make it do it on purpose either.

I always fill with the same fuel, I only run non ethanol fuel it. It runs so much better than with that ethanol crap.
It has good fuel pressure
I've replaced the Distributor (whole thing) and the crank gear was fine.
Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor, Coil, Air Filter
Compression Test was fine
The exhaust doesent seem to be plugged

So anyone have any ideas? Any help with this would be great, im running out of stuff to replace/check.

Sounds like you might have water in the tank....any codes or pending codes with a scanner (ie crank sensor)?

Get a can of fuel water displacer  (not fuel anti-freeze)...water may be trapped in the tank pickup area.

A lot of times the crank sensor won't code if it's intermediate.....you don't want dry gas you want water remover.
